Total Joint Replacement Program
The Total Joint Replacement Program at CaroMont Health is a component of our comprehensive Orthopedic program centered around restoring or replacing major joints based on proven practices. The program is designed for patients undergoing full or partial replacements of the hip or knee.
Our team of experts includes surgeons, physicians, nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals whose goal is to return patients home as safely and efficiently as possible while achieving maximum function. This program emphasizes the patient experience and provides patients and their "coaches" with effective pre- and post-operative education to successfully transition from hospital to home in a safe and efficient continuum.
Our multi-disciplinary team works before, during and after your hospital stay to ensure you have the tools you need for a successful outcome. Physical therapy, both individually and in group settings, encourages "coach" participation and supervision.
Preparing for Surgery
Your decision to have total joint replacement surgery is the first step toward a more active lifestyle. Our orthopedic team developed this Patient Guide to help prepare you for your upcoming surgery, hospital stay and recovery:
Taking time to review this guide will help you feel prepared and confident as you move forward with your surgery—from your initial preparation and pre-operative appointments, through the procedure itself, your immediate post-operative care, and all the way to your full recovery at home.

Pre-Operative Education
This pre-surgery patient education video is recommended by your surgeon and orthopedic team to help prepare you for total joint replacement surgery:
Pre-Operative Exercise
Pre-operative exercise, often called "prehab," plays a crucial role in your surgical success by building strength and endurance that will support your recovery. The following exercises will help prepare your body for total joint replacement surgery:

Same Day Discharge Pathway
We also offer same-day discharge for appropriate patients. This option allows you to be discharged home safely on the day of surgery after successful participation in a shortened but complete post-operative clinical pathway.
This program requires active participation by the patient in their healthcare. Your surgeon will evaluate you for pre-operative function, overall medical status and home support network to determine whether you are an appropriate candidate. An online Pre-Operative Education Class and Patient Guide are provided to explain what to expect before, during, and after surgery. Our team of experts will collaborate with you, your surgeon and your coach to ensure the best possible experience. You will recover from your surgery in a separate recovery unit for patients going home the same day. Our goal is to help patients return home safely and quickly without an overnight hospital stay.
Post-Operative Rehabilitation
As part of this program, you will participate in daily therapy sessions to regain range of motion and strength as you begin your recovery. You will also be given exercises to perform at home, and outpatient rehabilitation may be scheduled at one of our convenient facilities. Before discharge, our discharge planning specialists will discuss your individual treatment and follow-up plan. Rehabilitation services are offered through CaroMont Rehab and Sports Medicine in Gastonia.
