CaroMont Health Announces $200 Million Investment in Cancer Care

GASTONIA, N.C. — CaroMont Health today announced a $200 million investment in oncology care — the second largest investment in the health system’s history. The expansion represents the next major chapter in CaroMont Health’s long-term commitment to the communities it serves, following the development of the Belmont hospital campus and South Tower expansion at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.

The investment directly responds to one of the community’s most urgent health needs. Cancer is consistently a leading cause of death among Gaston County residents, and the rate of cancer incidence continues to rise. CaroMont Health’s nationally accredited cancer programs already provide care to more than 1,500 patients each year across five counties and two states — a number that continues to grow.

“Our community deserves world-class cancer care, and this investment is our commitment to making that a reality,” said Chris Peek, President and CEO of CaroMont Health. “Every person who hears the words ‘you have cancer’ deserves to know that an exceptional team, advanced technology, and a comprehensive network of support are already in place and ready for them. This is about delivering on the promise our community has entrusted us to keep.”

The investment encompasses three major components:

CaroMont Hematology & Oncology in Belmont: A new hematology and oncology physician office in the Medical Pavilion on the campus of CaroMont Regional Medical Center–Belmont, expanding access for patients in eastern Gaston and across our service area.

CaroMont Cancer Center in Gastonia: A new 125,000-square-foot cancer center on the main campus of CaroMont Regional Medical Center — a thoughtfully designed facility that will bring programs and services together under one roof, making care easier to navigate, more collaborative for providers, and more personal for every patient and family.

Radiation Therapy Center in Belmont: A new radiation therapy center on the campus of CaroMont Regional Medical Center–Belmont, expanding radiation therapy capacity and access by more than 30 percent. This project will require approval from the North Carolina Healthcare Planning and Certificate of Need (HPCON) Section.

These investments will double CaroMont Health’s oncology capacity from approximately 1,500 new cancer cases per year to 3,000 and position the health system as a regional leader in community-based oncology care.

“At CaroMont Health, our strategy has always been to put the needs of our patients and our community first,” Peek continued. “This $200 million investment reflects that commitment in the most tangible way possible. We are not simply expanding our footprint, we are building an integrated oncology network designed around the way patients and families actually experience care. When care is connected, outcomes are better, the experience is better and the burden on families is lighter.”

The vision behind the investment is guided by a simple but powerful belief: care is better when it is connected. Too often, patients experience cancer care as a series of disconnected appointments rather than a coordinated journey. CaroMont Health’s expanded oncology network is designed to change that — creating a seamless, supportive experience where every provider, every service and every resource works together around the patient.

“This investment is fundamentally about our patients,” said Dr. Todd Davis, Chief Physician Executive. “It allows us to enhance every dimension of the care experience — from the clinical expertise and technology patients depend on, to the way they move through their treatment journey. When we bring our teams and services together in a purpose-built environment, we create the conditions for better collaboration, greater access to advancing medicine, and a more personalized, compassionate experience for every patient and family we serve.”

CaroMont Hematology & Oncology-Belmont is scheduled to open in June. Additional details about the cancer center and radiation therapy center, including design and construction milestones, will be shared in the coming months.
