Madeline Hare, CaroMont Health LPN, Saves Restaurant Worker's Life

Madeline Hare has worked for CaroMont Health since February of 2020 as a CNA, and hopes to continue her education to eventually become a labor and delivery nurse. But just a few weeks ago, a lunch celebrating the end of her LPN clinical rotations with fellow Gaston College nursing students, put Hare’s knowledge and courage to the test.

A restaurant employee was choking in the kitchen. A member of the wait staff identified the group of nursing students and frantically asked for assistance, at which time Gaston College nursing instructor Joyce Floyd attempted to administer the Heimlich maneuver. Floyd could not dislodge the food due to the height difference between her and the victim. She requested Hare to step in and supported her with thorough instruction and guidance. Hare did not hesitate to assist and was able to successfully administer life-saving first aid to the individual.

“I am so thankful for the support and guidance of my nursing instructor, Ms. Floyd,” said Hare. “Working with her the past eight weeks during our clinical rotations, she always goes the extra mile for everyone she is around, but especially her students. She’s prepared us so well for our future careers and I’m more confident in my ability to care for others thanks to her instruction and encouragement.”

Hare has accepted an LPN position with CaroMont Health on an inpatient unit where she will continue work for the health and safety of others. For Hare, putting care first is more than just a phrase. It reflects the true nature of this extraordinary individual and nurse.
