Sunscreen 101

One in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. It’s not just important that you wear sunscreen, but how you choose sunscreen and how you apply sunscreen also matters.

The sun emits two kinds of ultraviolet rays: Ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B. Make sure your sunscreen of choice protects against both and is labeled BROAD SPECTRUM FOR UVA and Rays.

SPF of 30 or higher will provide the best protection.

No sunscreen is waterproof or sweatproof, so choosing a water resistant sunscreen is important. Here are a few tips for making sure you’re protected in and out of the water:

  • Apply sunscreen liberally. Most adults need about one ounce, about the size of a shot glass, of sunscreen to cover their entire body.
  • Swimsuits can move when you’re active, so it’s best to apply your sunscreen in private, without your swimsuit on.
  • After application, wait 30 minutes before diving in. This will allow your sunscreen to set and not wash off in the water.
  • Apply, then re-apply every two hours. This is a great time to take a break out of the water, re-apply and re-hydrate.
