Breast Cancer: Three Ways to Lower Your Risk

Approximately one in every eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. Annual screenings can help detect cancer in its early stages, when it’s most treatable, but is there anything women can do to lower their risk of developing the disease? Read three of our best tips for lowering your risk:

Include Exercise in Your Daily Routine

Did you know obesity can increase your risk for breast cancer? Regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight and has so many other incredible health benefits. Just 30 minutes a day or three hours per week can lower your risk of serious health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and breast cancer. Read more about including exercise in your daily routine here.

Eat Your Veggies (and Fruit)

Fruits and vegetables are high in flavonoids and carotenoids, both antioxidants that can reduce inflammation and your risk for breast cancer. Some of the best choices to include in your diet are leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale, carrots and berries, and citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits; eating a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables can help you get the different nutrients you need to stay healthy.

Stop Smoking

Smoking can increase an individual’s risk for a host of health issues including lung cancer, but did you know it also increases a person’s risk for breast cancer? If you smoke, there is never a better time to quit than right now. Talk to you doctor about resources that can help you on your way to a healthier future.
